Disturbing details are emerging from Bali about what reportedly happened on the morning Chicago socialite Sheila von Wiese-Mackwas murdered in her luxury hotel suite and her body stuffed into a suitcase.
Police reconstructed the murder scene in the hotel room on Oct. 13 from testimony given to them by Wiese-Mack's 19-year-old pregnant daughter, Heather Mack, and her boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, 21, who were arrested by Bali police on Aug. 12, hours after Sheila's bloodied and battered body was found in a suitcase in the back of a taxi cab, according to The Sydney Morning Herald. The murder, according to the article, occurred after Wiese-Mack made racist comments to Schaefer – who reportedly confessed to the killing on Oct. 10. – in her hotel suite.
Mack's lawyer, Raja Nasution, was quoted as saying that Heather wasn't involved in the murder, insisting that she was hiding in a bathroom of the suite when the argument between Schaefer and her mother turned violent. "It was all a blur and she acted like a robot," said the lawyer. "She was torn between her own mother and the father of her baby."
The killing allegedly occurred hours after Schaefer arrived in Bali, unbeknownst to Wiese-Mack, who had been vacationing on the island for several days with her daughter. Schaefer, at the urging of Heather, who was carrying his child, went to visit Wiese-Mack in room 317 at the hotel, carrying a bowl of fruit.
An argument quickly broke out over Heather's pregnancy with Wiese-Mack reportedly making offensive comments about Schaefer and his baby, allegedly threatening to kill the unborn child. Schaefer ended up beating Wiese-Mack to death with the fruit bowl after the argument escalated to the point that the victim wrapped her hands around Schaefer's throat.
Heather's shirt was covered in blood, her attorney claimed, because she allegedly hugged her mother's body after the murder – not because she was involved with the killing. The decision to place Wiese-Mack's body in the suitcase was Schaefer's, added the attorney.
Schaefer's Chicago-based attorney Thomas Durkin declined to comment on the latest revelations. The couple could face the death penalty if convicted with premeditated murder.
