Jamey Coleman was left for dead after the driver who hit him thought he was a deer
A grieving mum told the hit-and-run driver involved in her son’s death: “You’ve killed my son and I hate you for that.” Tracey Coleman lashed out at motorist Bethany Ward at Sandwell Coroner’s Court. An inquest into the death of Mrs Coleman’s son Jamey heard Ward failed to stop after hitting the 24-year-old because she thought she had collided with a deer. Ward, from Great Wyrley, is awaiting sentence after admitting failing to stop, failing to report an accident and driving not in accordance with her licence at Walsall Magistrates’ Court last month. Addressing her directly, Mrs Coleman said: “You’ve killed my son and I hate you for that. “I hate you.” Mr Coleman, a warehouse worker from Brownhills, died after being struck by a car on the A5 in the town at around 3.20am on March 30. He had spent the night with friends at the nearby White Horse pub, the Birmingham Mail reportsWard did not give evidence at the inquest but told police she had not been distracted as she drove home from a shift at a Frankie and Bennys restaurant. PC Stuart Thorpe said: “She was adamant the deer got up and ran away so she did not stop. She claimed not to be distracted in any way.” Mr Coleman’s friend Thomas Tonks said the car “came out of nowhere” and was “obviously doing more than the speed limit”. “I heard the impact and I saw him in mid-air,” Mr Tonks said. “I ran over to him as quick as I could to see if he was OK. “There were no signs of breaking, no signs of stopping – she just carried on.” Mr Coleman’s father told the inquest that his loss had “left a massive hole in the family that will never be filled”. He said: “Our Jamey was just a normal 24-year-old. He liked going out with his friends. “He liked his raves. “He liked going to work too and always got up on time – they had to convince him to take his holidays. “What we went through as a family that night I wouldn’t wish on anybody.” Mr Coleman’s family are now raising money for the Headway charity, which helps head trauma survivors and their families. Coroner Zafar Siddique concluded the cause of death was a road traffic collision.
