There was sporadic shooting in the Diobu area of Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, as President Goodluck Jonathan visited traders of the Rumuwoji (Mile One) Market to commiserate with them over the fire incident that occurred in the market in December last year.
It was gathered that less than 30 minutes after the convoy of the national chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mallam Ahmadu Adamu Muazu, who represented Jonathan, entered the popular Ojukwu field located in Diobu, venue of the meeting with traders, unknown gunmen started shooting into the air from the Elechi Beach axis of Diobu.
The ugly development led to the deployment of more policemen to the venue of the meeting, who also spread themselves to adjoining streets, and responded to the gunmen’s sporadic shooting by firing shots into the air.
Although the development caused pandemonium in the area, normalcy returned fast as business activities and vehicular movements were not interrupted.
President Jonathan, through Muazu later donated the sum of N250million to traders in the market, who were affected by the fire incident, and promised to rebuild the burnt market if re-elected as president in 2015.
