She’s a global superstar with stunning looks and a multi-million dollar fortune but Jennifer Lopez still has to put up with well-meaning friends meddling in her love life.
J.Lo has hardly struggled for dates since she finalised her divorce from Marc Anthony in June. Her relationship with dancer Casper Smart, 27, was shortlived as it emerged he had been swapping flirty text messages with transsexual model Sofie Vissa, 23.
But the diva soon bounced back by stepping out with Dancing with the Stars pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy and choreographer JR Taylor.
Despite this J.Lo has revealed that her friends are determined to find her a new man so she can settle down again.
She says: “My friends are constantly trying to set me up but I’m just not there right now. It’s not something that’s a priority. I have gone from relationship to relationship but, at the end of the day, I am not ashamed of the path I have taken or the lessons I have learned.
“I am who I am and I am human.
“I do what feels right in the moment. And right now it feels good to just be on my own and have some ‘I love Jennifer’ time, which I haven’t done a lot in my life.
“I am just spending time with myself and my kids. I still believe in love, of course, but the thing you think about most is who is good enough to come into the life of me and the kids?”
Lopez, 45, and Anthony, 46, were married for seven years and share custody of their six-year-old twins Max and Emme. J.Lo has the children most of the time in California, while Anthony stays in touch by Skype from his home in New York. “You just want the kids to know they are loved, that’s the most important thing,” she says. “Being a mother is my number one priority.”
The protective attitude is hardly surprising after she and her children were lucky to escape unharmed from a terrifying car crash in Malibu last month.
The singer and fellow actress Leah Remini were taking their children to a restaurant with Remini driving J.Lo’s new SUV when they were hit from behind.
Jennifer says: “We were only five feet from the restaurant when a guy just slammed into the back of us. I swear I thought a boulder had fallen on top of us. It was so scary and I got out of the car and started yelling and screaming because I was so frightened the kids could have been hurt. It was a very scary situation and my daughter was sobbing.
“The guy was driving drunk and got arrested. But we were all fine. The kids were all in the back seat with their seatbelts on, thank goodness.”
Nowadays free time and a family trip are a luxury for J.Lo as she juggles movies, albums, a world tour and writing a book with charity work and caring for her children.
The video for her new single Booty sees her strutting her shapely stuff in a revealing swimsuit alongside rapper Iggy Azalea, who at 24 is young enough to be her daughter. It has set the internet alight and been viewed 52 million times on YouTube.
“I guess moms aren’t supposed to be sexy,” she laughs. “Heaven forbid that when we are in our 40s we express any type of sexuality. It’s a fun song and it’s called Booty so it wouldn’t have been authentic not to have a big booty in the video.” J.Lo is justly proud of her famous body and works hard to keep it in shape. “I have good genetics to begin with because my mother and grandmother were both very beautiful, shapely women and I work really hard
at it too.”
Last year J.Lo added another string to her bow by becoming executive producer of US television show The Fosters, which follows an interracial lesbian couple bringing up a mix of biological, adopted and fostered children. She took the hands-on role after the script struck a chord. “My aunt, my mom’s older sister, was gay and we had a special bond. She passed away from cancer just when this script came across my desk.
“She grew up in a time when it was shameful to be gay. That always hurt me and there’s a part of me believes it’s where the cancer came from.”
J.Lo is also set to become an author with a forthcoming book about her recent Dance Again world tour.
“The book started as a diary but when I sat down and wrote it, it turned into something else,” she says. “I had just
gone through a divorce and decided to go on the road. It was a crazy time and
I didn’t know how much of a transition I was going through.”
Despite her demanding career, life is much more settled now than it was when she shot to stardom opposite George Clooney in comedy crime caper Out of Sight in 1998.
Back then her club-hopping, failed love affairs and even arrest made as many headlines as her films and her music.
She wed her first husband, waiter Ojani Noa, in 1997 but split in 1998 and began dating Sean “Puffy” Combs. But their relationship broke down after they were caught up in a gunfight at a New York club in December 1999. They were held by police over weapon possession but she was quickly cleared.
J.Lo then married dancer Cris Judd in 2001 but they split less than a year later and she got engaged to Ben Affleck.
But Affleck was caught in a strip club days before their planned wedding in September 2003. J.Lo married old flame Anthony in June 2004.
Given the emotional rollercoaster she has been on it is hardly surprising she is unsure if she will tie the knot again. “You know, I’ve always believed in that institution but it is difficult,” she says. “At the end of the day you just have to listen to yourself. You can’t get clouded with the voices and advice of others all the time.
“I have a gut instinct and I follow that. When I don’t it’s when I usually go wrong with people and relationships. You make decisions for two reasons: out of fear or out of love, and when you make them out of fear they end in misery.”
Despite the distractions, J.Lo became one of the highest paid Hispanic entertainers of all time but it hasn’t been easy. Born in New York’s tough Bronx borough, she started out as a dancer in stage musicals before forging success as a Hollywood leading lady and successful pop singer.
Like her love life, her film career may have been more miss than hit recently but she isn’t giving up and has just completed work on the thriller The Boy Next Door, which is due for release next year.
In the meantime she will continue doing things her way – just as she did when she took her mother, cousins and children with her on her world tour. “I just try to do things that feel right to me,” she says. “I don’t try to follow or look at what anybody else is doing.
“I am not opposed to having fun, being silly, falling down, getting up... anything.
“I am just open for the experience and for whatever comes along and I try not to limit myself. I do what feels right to me and that’s it.
