A Shoreditch man has been jailed for 16 months and banned from the Central Line during rush hour for the next five years after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman twice on the Tube.
Mohibur Rahman, 35, of Ligonier Street, Shoreditch, attacked his victim first on Monday February 3 as she travelled between Chancery Lane and Bank.
He slid his hand across her hips and squeezed her bottom.
His victim, from Ilford, bravely confronted Rahman, who held both of his hands up in the air and said: “sorry”. He then fled the train.
Sadly, this wasn’t the end of her ordeal. Rahman struck again on Thursday February 20 as she was making her way up the escalators at Holborn station.
She was about three-quarters of the way up when she felt a hand go up her skirt and touch her bottom.
Again, the victim confronted him, following him out of the station and grabbing him by his collar.
British Transport Police officers checked when Rahman had been using his Oyster card, and discovered that on the day of the first offence, he had been lurking on the Underground for well over an hour, despite only making the 10-15 minute journey from Holborn to Liverpool Street station.
There were several other instances of Rahman appearing to make short journeys, but taking vast amounts of time to complete them.
Rahman was sentenced at Blackfriars Crown Court on Friday November 7 and given a 16-month jail sentence. British Transport Police applied for the five-year ban, which prevents Rahman travelling on the Central Line between 7am and 10am or 4pm and 7pm. The Sexual Offences Prevention Order also prohibits Rahman entering Holborn London Underground station between Mondays and Fridays, or from contacting his victim.
Detective Constable Darren Davies said: “We take all sexual offences seriously and we are pleased that Rahman has been locked away for this crime and that we successfully were granted the order banning him from parts of the Tube Network.
“The victim was left extremely distressed and angered by this assault but, we are extremely grateful to her for coming forward and reporting the incident, which allowed us to carry out an investigation and bring Rahman to justice.”
