Children and adults that are young at heart are on their way to enjoying the best of the old tales of ace story-teller and playwright, Jimi Solanke, through bedside lamps.
Uncle Jimi as he is fondly called is currently putting finishing touches to the innovation in partnership with a technology firm. According to him, the tales voiced in bedside lamps will allow listeners have a feel of didactic tales akin to listening to him in real life.
He said, ‘‘I have been doing what I know how to do best. I just finished attending an exhibition in Lagos where I showcased some of my new art works. Efforts are on to record my old tales into bedside lamps for children to listen to and learn. The experience will be like listening to tales ‘under the baobab tree.’ Each fully-charged lamp, containing over 20 tales, will last for three hours.’’
The 72-year-old folk singer added that he also considered making animation of his stories to compete with children animated films currently littering the market.
He added that he decided to do so having discovered that many of the animated children movies contain scenes of violence.
‘‘I have watched many of them. For instance, one will just see a scene where a character runs and smashes his or head against the wall. It is not a friendly thing for children to watch, ’’ he said.
At the moment, the veteran performer is rounding off a play titled Etiti for the convocation ceremony of a faith-based institution in Ondo State. He noted that the play dwells largely on youth advocacy in Nigeria.
