A Staten Island grand jury has voted not to bring criminal charges against the white New York
City police officer who used a chokehold to restrain Mr. Garner, an unarmed black
man who died after a confrontation.
Daniel Pantaleo, the white NYPD officer had placed 43-year-old father of six Eric Garner in
the choke hold after Garner was detained for apparently selling illegal cigarettes. The incident
was caught on video by a cell phone camera and published nationally, fueling claims of police brutality
and unfair treatment of black men by law enforcement.
The decision was reached on Wednesday after months of testimony including from the
officer, Daniel Pantaleo, It came less than two weeks after a grand jury in
Ferguson, Mo., declined to bring charges against a white officer who fatally
